April 1, Docent/Mentor Internship Begins
Docent/Mentor Internship Program

April 1st - October 31st, 2010

Docent -- a person who acts as a guide, typically on a voluntary basis, in a museum, art gallery or zoo.
Mentor -- someone who supports the progress of a less experienced person.

The Sustainability Project is offering a low carbon footprint living experience in the Emerson Brook Forest designed to promote nature literacy, environmental stewardship, and skills for sustainable living.

Explore and practice the 13 core naturalist routines
Re-awaken your senses and awareness of self in the natural world
Learn and practice earth friendly gardening methods
Gain an understanding of renewable energy
Embrace lessons for personal well-being
Strengthen leadership skills
Advocate for a healthy planet

Internships are available from April through October and may last from one week to six months. Interns are encouraged to live onsite in the Emerson Brook Forest. In addition to structured learning modules, participants will share in The Sustainability Project's calendar of programs and serve as Docent/Mentors, greeting and sharing naturalists stories and skills with visitors to the wheelchair accessible Emerson Brook Forest Center.

Sliding scale fee $250-$350 per week covers the cost of instructors, food, lodging and laundry. Creative funding strategies are encouraged. April 5, Steward of the Earth After-School Program Begins
Nature, Gardening, and Nutrition After-School Program at the Gilsum Elementary School

April 9 - 11, Edible Forest Gardening Workshop I
Edible Forest Gardening Theory and Design with Kim Almeida Kim, a Permaculture Degree candidate brings vibrancy and a light-hearted approach to the study of Edible Forest Gardening. Apprentice to "Edible Forest Gardening" author and pioneer Dave Jacke, Kim offers a comprehensive workshop on this earth and community oriented gardening method. Edible Forest Gardening attempts to mimic the structure and function of natural ecosystems to create self-maintaining, self-fertilizing, and self-renewing ecologies to grow food, fuel, fiber, fodder, fertilizers, and "farmaceuticals". Explore the vision, theory, design, and practice of ecosystem agriculture through lectures, field observations, and experiential classes using the temperate deciduous forest ecosystem as the model. This and the subsequent workshop listed below will focus on the Piedmont-Fleischmann homestead in the Emerson Brook Forest to provide attendees with practical skills they can use on their own properties. Sliding Scale $225-$375. Includes food and camping. Indoor accommodations available

April 18, The Sustainability Project's 10th Annual Meeting
Join us as we begin our 10th year with a potluck supper followed by the 2010 election of officers and farewells to outgoing board members. A slide show presentation will highlight our progress over the years and forecasts for our future. The meeting will be held in the Cleveland Building community room located at Roxbury Plaza, Keene.

April 20, Monadock Community Gardening & Seed Saving Initiative (MCGSSI) meeting
Monadnock Community Gardening and Seed Saving Initiative (MCGSSI) to improve food security in our community. We meet on the third Tuesday of each month April through October for seasonal discussions and hands on lessons with local presenters at various garden sites. April 20, May 25, June 22, July 20, Aug. 17, Sept. 21, Oct. 19.

April 24, TSP at the Monadock Earth Festival
11 am - 4 pm - Join The Sustainability Project at the Monadnock Earth Festival in Keene.

April 25, Community Day in the Emerson Brook Forest
Monthly Community Days in the Emerson Brook Forest -- Held on a Saturday or Sunday, April through October, 9 am -2 pm
Join in the playful work of creating wheelchair accessible trails, gardens and shelters in the Emerson Brook Forest. Bring your favorite tool and work gloves. If you aren't able to do the physical aspects of the work, come anyway. Share your music, poetry or visions for a sustainable future! Working in the Emerson Brook Forest is always a social event!

April 25, Forest Guide Nature Studies Program
The Stewards of the Earth -- Forest Guide Nature Studies Program meets in the Emerson Brook Forest on the last Sunday of each month from 2-4 pm Use thirteen core naturalist practices to reawaken your senses and awareness of self in the natural environment. Jon Young describes these routines, observed in nature-centered cultures worldwide, in his book the Coyote's Guide to Connecting with Nature.
This is a great way to connect with others interested in learning more about the natural world.  Structured for open and ongoing enrollment, the program is free of charge for those who give in return, by scheduling time to greet, guide and share their naturalist knowledge and skills with visitors to the Emerson Brook Forest Center.

April 30 - May 2, Edible Forest Gardening Workshop II
Establishing a Forest Garden in a Residential Setting with Kim Almeida. A hands-on workshop on garden site preparation, soil improvement, tree, shrub and perennial planting techniques, and weed control methods. This class builds on the skills learned in the previous workshop but can stand alone. Sliding Scale: $225-$375. Includes food and camping. Indoor accommodations available.
