Docent -- a person who acts as a guide, typically on a voluntary basis, in a museum, art gallery or zoo.
Mentor -- someone who supports the progress of a less experienced person.
The Sustainability Project is offering a low carbon footprint living experience in the Emerson Brook Forest designed to promote nature literacy, environmental stewardship, and skills for sustainable living.
Explore and practice the 13 core naturalist routines
Re-awaken your senses and awareness of self in the natural world
Learn and practice earth friendly gardening methods
Gain an understanding of renewable energy
Embrace lessons for personal well-being
Strengthen leadership skills
Advocate for a healthy planet
Internships are available from April through October and may last from one week to six months. Interns are encouraged to live onsite in the Emerson Brook Forest. In addition to structured learning modules, participants will share in The Sustainability Project’s calendar of programs and serve as Docent/Mentors, greeting and sharing naturalists stories and skills with visitors to the wheelchair accessible Emerson Brook Forest Center.
Sliding scale fee $250-$350 per week covers the cost of instructors, food, lodging and laundry. Creative funding strategies are encouraged.

Nature, Gardening, and Nutrition After-School Program at the Gilsum Elementary School
April 9 - 11, Edible Forest Gardening Workshop I
Edible Forest Gardening Theory and Design with Kim Almeida Kim, a Permaculture Degree candidate brings vibrancy and a light-hearted approach to the study of Edible Forest Gardening. Apprentice to “Edible Forest Gardening” author and pioneer Dave Jacke, Kim offers a comprehensive workshop on this earth and community oriented gardening method. Edible Forest Gardening attempts to mimic the structure and function of natural ecosystems to create self-maintaining, self-fertilizing, and self-renewing ecologies to grow food, fuel, fiber, fodder, fertilizers, and “farmaceuticals”. Explore the vision, theory, design, and practice of ecosystem agriculture through lectures, field observations, and experiential classes using the temperate deciduous forest ecosystem as the model. This and the subsequent workshop listed below will focus on the Piedmont-Fleischmann homestead in the Emerson Brook Forest to provide attendees with practical skills they can use on their own properties. April 18, The Sustainability Project's 10th Annual Meeting
Join us as we begin our 10th year with a potluck supper followed by the 2010 election of officers and farewells to outgoing board members. A slide show presentation will highlight our progress over the years and forecasts for our future. The meeting will be held in the Cleveland Building community room located at Roxbury Plaza, Keene.

Establishing a Forest Garden in a Residential Setting with Kim Almeida. A hands-on workshop on garden site preparation, soil improvement, tree, shrub and perennial planting techniques, and weed control methods. This class builds on the skills learned in the previous workshop but can stand alone. Sliding Scale: $225-$375. Includes food and camping. Indoor accommodations available.

May 15-16, Community Work Day and “Bio-Blitz” in the Emerson Brook Forest
On Saturday, May 15th, from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm, The Sustainability Project will host a community workday in the Emerson Brook Forest. Help create wheelchair accessible trails and gardens in our outdoor center. Long pants, sturdy shoes, work gloves and a bag lunch are recommended. If you aren't able to do the physical aspects of the work, come anyway. Share your music, poetry and visions for a sustainable future!
Just after the work session, at 4:00 pm, beginner and experienced naturalists are invited to take part in a twenty-four hour “Bio-Blitz” (Natural Resource Inventory) of the Sustainability Project’s bio-diverse 33-acre Emerson Brook Forest land. On May 18, Valerie Piedmont will give a tour of The Sustainability Project’s Edible Forest Garden located on 57 Emerson Brook Drive in Gilsum, NH at 6:30pm. June 19, Sustainable Medicine Making w/ Alisa Andrews
10 am - 12 pm Sustainable Medicine Making: Herbal Preparations for Topical Use (Oils and Salves) with Herbalist, Alisa Andrews. Learn to make herb-infused oils and salves for topical use. We will use freshly-gathered, local, wild plants for an experience in truly sustainable medicine making. As time permits, we will do some wild plant identification, and discuss other herbal preparations that are often used topically, such as: compresses, poultices, liniments, spritzers, powders and pastes. Each participant will take home a sample of the oil or salve that we make in class. Handouts including instructions and recipes will be provided. Suggested donation: $20-$30

Far from a typical restaurant style pizza night, this is a hands on, guest led affair. Orchard Hill Breadworks provides crusts, the oven, a baker, and some instruction, while guests bring toppings including sauce and cheese, make their own pizza, bring their own drinks and any other amenities they want. (They do provide a pot of sauce and a bowl of cheese to get things started so that the first person through the line isn't stuck with a plain zucchini flat bread) We ask for a donation of at least $3.50 per crust which covers costs. All profits beyond Orchard Hill's costs are donated to the Sustainability Project. The Solar Sisters will perform songs of farm and garden.

Come see the fruits of the many hands that worked to create our nature center in the beautiful Emerson Brook Forest. While it's still a work in progress, check out our two-year-old edible forest garden, a 400-foot length of wheelchair accessible trail, and walk our new network of hiking trails. At 1:00, join Herbalist Alisa Andrews to learn about the wild plants of our forest. Be prepared for some spontaneous fun and bring a picnic lunch!

As part of our ongoing monthly series of Monadnock Community Gardening and Seed Saving Initiative (MCGSSI) meetings, author and journalist Jeanne Prevett Sable will present a talk demonstrating how organically grown foods can be corrupted by the genes of totally unrelated organisms through the spread of pollen or seeds from genetically engineered crops, and how this may impact farmers, consumers, and our health. The talk will be held at Green Energy Options, 79 Emerald St., Keene.
Sable published Seed Keepers of Crescentville in 2005, a novel that predicted the spread of genetic contamination to crops and wild salmon in the Northeast, government approval of cloned meats, the widespread litigation against U.S farmers by a major chemical corporation for unintended seed patent infringement, and several other developments related to the GMO issue that are currently in the news.

2-4 pm - Sustainable Immunity: Herbs for Winter Health with Herbalist, Alisa Andrews. Learn how to use herbs, foods, some supplements and other natural therapies to build stronger immune systems and stay healthier during the cold months. We will focus on herbs that are found growing wild in our bioregion, or that can be grown in our own gardens. Sample some delicious herbal preparations designed to support winter health. Handouts and recipes provided. Suggested donation: $20-30.

December 11, A Crescent Moon Community Celebration of Earth-Inspired Art
Come celebrate the earth with nature-inspired poetry, prose, storytelling, music, dance and visual art at Congregation Ahavas Achim, 84 Hastings Avenue, Keene. Enjoy delicious sweet and savory nibbles donated by local restaurants and businesses. Proceeds from the event benefit The Sustainability Project, promoting a love of nature, environmental stewardship and caring communities. Artists are invited to share their works in honor of this beautiful garden planet.
